Soap Plant Wacko's customer reviews analysis

Soap Plant / Wacko enjoys a largely positive reputation among customers who appreciate its unique character and eclectic range of products. Many of the reviews highlight the store's wide array of unusual items, specifically noting its focus on counterculture, LGBTQ, occult, and prank materials. Customers praise the friendly staff and the large store inventory, suggesting a rich browsing experience full of 'goodies and treasures.' However, there are concerns regarding some customer service aspects, such as alleged racial profiling and excessive monitoring, which have marred the experiences of some patrons. Additionally, operational changes like the closing of the in-store gallery and tight customer restrictions due to health safety measures have further impacted the customer experience. Nonetheless, the store appears to maintain a strong appeal due to its diverse product selection and its status as a cultural icon recommended by notable figures like Anthony Bourdain.

Positive Feedback

Soap Plant / Wacko's key positive aspects largely center around its distinctive product offering and inviting atmosphere. Customers are consistently impressed with the extensive variety of items catering to various interests, from pop culture and rock and roll to more niche markets such as kooky art and vintage items. The in-store gallery further enhances the experience by providing a platform for contemporary art with a counterculture edge. Shoppers frequently mention the welcoming and knowledgeable staff, who contribute to a pleasant shopping journey by assisting in locating the perfect items. Moreover, the store's recommendation by a public figure of Anthony Bourdain's caliber has undoubtedly boosted its appeal. The physical space of the store is also praised for being extensive and inviting, allowing for long browsing sessions, which seems to be a common occurrence for visitors.

Concerns and Threads

On the negative side, customer feedback points to specific issues with customer service and store environment. A recurring concern revolves around the uncomfortable experience caused by staff closely monitoring customers, with some allegations suggesting racial bias in surveillance practices. This behavior has led to discomfort and a negative perception among affected customers, marking a notable flaw in the establishment's customer relations. The store's strict adherence to mask mandates and the resulting discomfort due to a poorly functioning air conditioning system also contribute to a less than ideal shopping environment for some. Furthermore, the closure of the in-store art gallery and limitations on customer capacity, which may be due to pandemic-related safety measures, have diminished the full experience that Soap Plant / Wacko previously offered to art enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.

This is the must go to gift shop in LA. Even the great Anthony Bourdain said so. Eclectic selection ranging from pop culture books to gag gifts. In the back of the store, there is also an interesting gallery called la luz de Jesus gallery with art pieces that has a counter culture edge. You might spend a longer time than you intended to in this store.
